Licensing the Ballets

When requesting to license a ballet from The George Balanchine Trust, please send the following at least six months before the performance date:
  • A written request, including the name of the ballet you are interested in licensing (if known); performance dates and proposed length of license (per performance, or a mult-year period);  venue information and ticket prices, proposed rehearsal period, and number of male and female dancers in the company.
  • A DVD/videotape of your company in a recent performance (if this is your first request to the Trust).  The most helpful and advantageous recordings are those exhibiting the dancers' technique, agility, and speed.  Women should be en pointe and men wearing tights.

Note:  If you are not certain about the ballet you would like to request, the Trust will be in direct contact with you once the submitted materials are reviewed.

The license fees and royalties are based on the organizational structure and budget of each company, school, university or presenter.

All licensed ballets require a Balanchine approved repetiteur to stage the work and see it through to the premiere.  Repetiteurs are contracted separately from the Trust license.

Please note that there are approximately 75 Balanchine ballets that are currently active.  Others have been reconstructed and may be staged with the assistance of the restorers.  Still others are rarely performed but are capable of being staged.  Those ballets are indicated in the "Ballets" section with asterisks.
